Hairline Transplant London: Cost, Grafts and Results

Short answer

How much does a hairline transplant cost in London?

Most hairline restorations use 1,200 to 2,500 grafts, which typically costs about £4,900 to £6,900 in London. A small temple refinement can be less, from about £3,500 for 500 grafts. DHI usually adds £900 to £1,200 to the FUE price.

The hairline frames the face, so it is usually the first place men notice hair loss and the area they most want restored. A hairline transplant moves permanent follicles from the back and sides of the scalp to the front, where they keep growing for life. The difference between an obvious transplant and a natural one lies in the design: where the line sits, how irregular it is, which grafts go at the very edge and the angle of every hair. We plan every hairline around your age, face shape, donor supply and likely future hair loss.

How many grafts does a new hairline need?

The answer depends on how far your hairline has receded, how dense you want the front to be and how much donor hair you have. As a rough guide, the front third of the scalp can need 1,500 to 2,500 grafts for a convincing, dense result. Our hair graft calculator gives an estimate by area, and our guide to the Norwood scale explains how each stage of loss translates into graft numbers.

Grafts carry one to four hairs each. Single-hair grafts form the soft front edge; two and three-hair grafts sit behind for density. So the number of hairs moved is usually much higher than the graft count.

How is a natural hairline designed?

At your assessment the surgeon will discuss:

  • Height: a mature hairline usually sits higher than a teenage one. Placing it too low can look unnatural and uses donor hair you may need later.
  • Shape: natural hairlines are irregular, with micro and macro irregularities rather than a straight edge.
  • Temples: the temple points and recession at the corners are key to looking natural.
  • Future loss: if hair behind the new line continues to thin, the hairline must still look right in ten years.
  • Donor capacity: how many grafts can be taken now and in future without over-harvesting.

We draw the proposed line on your scalp so you can see it in a mirror and agree it before any procedure.

FUE, DHI or FUT for the hairline?

All three techniques can produce a natural hairline. The differences are in how grafts are harvested and implanted:

FUE, DHI or FUT for the hairline?
TechniqueHow it worksHairline considerations
FUEGrafts extracted individually; incisions made, then grafts placedMost common; cost-effective
DHIGrafts implanted with a pen-like tool without pre-made incisionsFine control of angle and density; costs more
FUTA strip of scalp is removed and divided into graftsLarge numbers of grafts; leaves a linear scar

How much does a hairline transplant cost in London?

In London, hair transplants are priced either by package or per graft. For hairline work, typical FUE fees are about £3,500 for 500 grafts, £4,900 for around 1,200 grafts and £5,900 to £6,900 for 1,800 to 2,500 grafts. DHI usually adds around £900 to £1,200. What happens on the day?

What happens on the day?
StageWhat happensTypical time
Final designHairline drawn and agreed30–60 minutes
AnaestheticLocal anaesthetic to donor and recipient areas15–30 minutes
ExtractionGrafts removed from the back and sides2–4 hours
ImplantationGrafts placed along the hairline2–4 hours
Aftercare briefingInstructions and medication15–30 minutes

Most people are awake throughout, can watch television or listen to music, and go home the same day.

Recovery after a hairline transplant

The hairline is visible, so recovery is often the biggest concern. Typically:

  • Days 1–3: some swelling may move down onto the forehead.
  • Days 7–10: tiny scabs around each graft fall away with gentle washing.
  • Weeks 2–6: transplanted hairs often shed; this is normal.
  • Months 3–4: new growth begins, often fine at first.
  • Months 8–12: most of the visible change.
  • Months 12–18: final density and texture.

Most people take about a week off work, longer if the job is physical. Our hair transplant recovery timeline explains each stage, and our hair transplant aftercare guide covers washing and sleeping.

Who is a good candidate?

A hairline transplant usually suits people who:

  • Have stable or slowing hair loss
  • Have good donor density at the back and sides
  • Have realistic expectations about density and hairline height
  • Are willing to use medication if recommended to protect existing hair

Very young men with rapidly progressing loss may be advised to wait. See the best age for a hair transplant and who is not a candidate.

For specific questions, see our guides to beard transplants, eyebrow transplant costs and body hair transplants.

Can women have a hairline transplant?

Yes. Women most often seek hairline work to lower a naturally high forehead, restore temples after traction alopecia or refine the hairline after a facelift. The design and approach differ from male pattern loss. See female hair transplants in London.

Hairline transplants for afro hair

Curly and afro-textured hair has curved follicles beneath the skin, which affects extraction and implantation. Hairline restoration for traction alopecia along the temples and front edge is a common request. See afro hair transplants.

What about the area behind the hairline?

Restoring only the edge can leave a gap in density if the area behind is also thinning. Many plans combine the hairline with the forelock and front third, and leave the crown for later or for medication. Our crown hair transplant guide covers the back of the head.

How long does a hairline transplant last?

Transplanted follicles from the permanent donor zone are resistant to the hormone that causes male pattern loss, so they usually keep growing for life. Native hair around them can still thin with age, which is why planning for the future matters. See how long a hair transplant lasts.

Common hairline mistakes to avoid

  • A hairline placed too low for your age
  • A straight, ruler-edged line with no irregularity
  • Large multi-hair grafts at the very front
  • Ignoring the temples, which makes the hairline look like a helmet
  • Using so many grafts at the front that the donor area is depleted for future needs

Frequently asked questions

How many grafts do I need for a hairline transplant?
Temple refinement can take 500 to 1,000 grafts. Rebuilding a receded hairline usually needs 1,200 to 2,000, and a hairline plus forelock 2,000 to 2,500 or more.
Does a hairline transplant look natural?
It can, when the hairline is designed to suit your age and face, single-hair grafts are used at the front edge and the angle of each graft matches natural growth.
When will I see results from a hairline transplant?
Transplanted hairs usually shed in the first weeks, regrowth starts around months 3 to 4, and the final result is typically seen at 12 to 18 months.
Can a receding hairline be fixed without surgery?
Medication can slow loss and sometimes regrow some hair at the temples, but it cannot rebuild a hairline that has receded significantly. A transplant is the only way to move permanent hair forward.
Is FUE or DHI better for the hairline?
Both give natural results. DHI allows implanting without pre-made incisions, which some surgeons prefer for dense hairline work; FUE is often more cost-effective.
