Afro Hair Transplant London: Curly Hair Grafting

Updated · By Hair Transplants London · 5 min read

Short answer

Can you have a hair transplant with afro hair?

Yes. Afro-textured hair can be transplanted successfully, and its curl often gives more visual coverage per graft. The follicles curve beneath the skin, so extraction needs adapted FUE technique and an experienced team. Common reasons are traction alopecia at the hairline and temples, and male pattern loss.

Afro-textured hair behaves differently from straight hair, above and below the skin. The curl of each strand continues beneath the surface, so the follicle itself is curved. That affects how grafts are extracted and implanted, how many grafts are needed for good coverage and how the scalp heals. With the right technique and planning, people with afro hair can have very natural results, and the curl often means each graft covers more of the scalp than an equivalent straight-haired graft.

Why is afro hair different for a transplant?

  • Curved follicles: the follicle follows the curl under the skin, so a straight punch can cut through it if not handled carefully.
  • Lower density but more coverage: afro hair often has slightly fewer follicles per square centimetre but much greater visual volume per hair.
  • Graft handling: grafts need careful dissection and placement to keep the curved follicle intact.
  • Scarring tendency: some people of African descent are more prone to raised or keloid scars.

How is FUE adapted for afro hair?

Extraction is slower and more deliberate. Techniques may include:

  • Choosing punch size and type to suit the curve of the follicle
  • Using a shallower initial score before freeing the graft
  • Test extractions to check the transection rate before the main session
  • Careful handling and hydration of grafts
  • Implanting at the right angle to match the natural curl

Some surgeons prefer DHI implanters for the hairline; others prefer FUE with pre-made incisions. See FUE vs FUT vs DHI and DHI hair transplants.

Traction alopecia: the most common reason

Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by repeated pulling, often from tight braids, weaves, extensions, cornrows or tight ponytails. It typically affects the edges, temples and hairline. In early stages it can recover if the tension stops; when it has been present for years, follicles may be permanently lost.

A transplant can work well for traction alopecia, provided:

  • The hairstyles causing tension have stopped
  • The loss has been stable, typically for at least six to twelve months
  • The scalp is healthy, with no active inflammation
  • Donor hair at the back and sides is good

Hairline design for women usually restores the natural edges and temples rather than creating a new shape. See female hair transplants in London and hairline transplants in London.

Male pattern loss in afro hair

Men with afro hair experience male pattern loss in the same Norwood stages as other men. See the Norwood scale. Because curl gives more coverage, results at a given graft count can look denser than with straight hair. Many men with very short hair or a shaved style also consider scalp micropigmentation.

How much does an afro hair transplant cost?

Fees follow graft count, as for other FUE procedures. Typical London prices are about £3,500 for 500 grafts, £4,900 for 1,200 grafts and £5,900 to £6,900 for 1,800 to 2,500 grafts. Some cases cost more because extraction takes longer. See hair transplant costs in the UK and our hair graft calculator.

Scarring and keloid risk

We ask every patient about scarring history. If you or close family members have had keloids, a small test session can show how your skin heals before a full procedure. FUE leaves tiny round marks; FUT leaves a linear scar that may be more likely to widen or raise in keloid-prone skin, so FUE is usually preferred. See hair transplant scars.

Recovery after an afro hair transplant

Recovery after an afro hair transplant
TimeWhat to expect
Days 1–3Swelling possible; head raised when sleeping
Days 3–10Gentle washing; scabs loosen
Weeks 2–6Shedding of transplanted hairs
Months 3–4New growth begins
Months 12–18Final result

Most people return to desk work after about a week. Our aftercare guide explains washing and sleeping, and the recovery timeline covers each stage.

When can I braid or wear extensions again?

Tension on the transplanted area must be avoided while grafts settle and grow. As a guide:

  • First 4 weeks: no braids, weaves, wigs that grip the hairline, or tight headwear
  • Months 1–6: gentle styling only; avoid tension on the grafted area
  • Long term: avoid tight styles at the hairline to protect both native and transplanted hair

Chemical relaxers and dyes should usually be avoided for at least four to six weeks; we will advise you on your own timeline.

Is an afro hair transplant permanent?

Grafts from the permanent donor zone usually keep growing for life. Traction alopecia can recur in native hair if tight styling resumes, so protecting the hairline long term matters. See how long a hair transplant lasts.

Choosing a clinic for afro hair

Ask:

  • How much experience does the team have with afro-textured hair?
  • Can I see results for similar hair types?
  • Will you do test extractions?
  • How do you assess keloid risk?
  • What is your approach to hairline design for traction alopecia?

Our guide to choosing a hair transplant clinic in London has a full checklist.

Beard transplants for afro hair

Many men with afro hair have patchy beards or want a defined beard line. Beard transplants follow similar principles, with careful angle and direction to match the curl. See beard transplants in London.

Can I use beard or body hair as donor?

When scalp donor hair is limited, beard hair can sometimes supplement it. See body hair transplants.

Haircare before your procedure

In the weeks before a transplant, we usually suggest:

  • Taking out braids, weaves and extensions well in advance, so the scalp can be examined and settle
  • Avoiding chemical relaxers for a few weeks beforehand
  • Keeping the scalp moisturised and free of build-up from heavy products
  • Letting us know about any scalp conditions, such as dermatitis, so they can be treated first
  • Discussing how short the donor area will need to be trimmed, and how to style around it

What results to expect at each stage

Curly hair often looks fuller sooner than straight hair once it starts to grow, because each strand coils and covers more scalp. New hairs may start straighter and finer, then develop their natural curl over the following months. Final texture, density and curl are usually clear at around 12 to 18 months.

Choosing a surgeon for afro hair

Ask how often the surgeon treats afro hair and to see before-and-after photos from patients with similar curl patterns and hairlines. Check how the team handles the curved follicles below the skin, which extraction tools they use, and how they plan for keloid risk. A good consultation will discuss the hairline shape that suits your face and culture, not a template. If you have had keloid scarring before, mention it early so it can be assessed before any surgery is booked.

Book an assessment

At an assessment we examine your hairline, donor area and scalp health, discuss your styling and give you a written graft estimate and price. Request an assessment through our form.

Frequently asked questions

Is FUE suitable for afro hair?
Yes, with adapted technique. Because follicles curve under the skin, extraction is slower and needs careful punch selection to avoid damaging grafts.
Can traction alopecia be treated with a transplant?
Often, yes, once the cause such as tight braids or extensions has stopped and the loss has been stable. Hairline and temple restoration are common.
How many grafts do I need for an afro hair transplant?
It depends on the area. Temple and edge restoration often needs 800 to 1,500 grafts; a full hairline 1,500 to 2,500. Curl can mean fewer grafts give good coverage.
Is there a higher risk of keloid scarring?
People with a personal or family history of keloids may be at higher risk. We ask about this and may suggest a test session first.
How much does an afro hair transplant cost in London?
Fees are similar to other FUE procedures by graft count, from about £3,500 for 500 grafts to £5,900 to £6,900 for 1,800 to 2,500 grafts, and can be higher if extraction is more time-consuming.
