Updated · By Hair Transplants London · 5 min read

A beard hair transplant in London typically costs from about £3,500 for around 500 grafts to fill patches, £4,900 to £6,400 for 1,200 to 2,000 grafts for cheeks and jawline, and up to about £7,900 for a full beard of around 3,500 grafts; most people return to work within a week, and the result develops over 6 to 12 months.

AreaTypical graftsTypical London price
Filling small patches300–600from £3,500
Moustache300–700from £3,500
Goatee600–1,200£3,500–£4,900
Sideburns (both)400–800£3,500–£4,500
Cheeks and jawline1,200–2,000£4,900–£6,400
Full beard2,500–3,500£6,900–£7,900

These are typical per-graft prices. Beard work needs careful angling and placement, so it is usually priced by graft count rather than as a large-capacity package. At Hair Transplants London we restore patchy beards, moustaches and sideburns, and every plan includes a graft estimate and total price in writing.

What is a beard hair transplant?

A beard transplant moves hair follicles from a donor area, usually the back and sides of the scalp, into the face to fill patches or create a fuller beard. It uses the same techniques as scalp transplants, most often FUE, where individual grafts are removed with a tiny punch. Beard grafts are usually single- and two-hair grafts, placed one by one at a sharp angle and in the direction facial hair naturally grows.

Occasionally, hair from under the chin is used as donor hair, because it matches beard hair closely, but supply is limited.

Who is a good candidate for a beard transplant?

Beard transplants suit men who:

  • Have patchy or sparse beard growth, particularly on the cheeks, moustache or around the chin.
  • Have scars in the beard area, for example from injury, surgery or acne.
  • Want to restore beard hair lost to previous laser hair removal or burns.
  • Have enough donor hair at the back and sides of the scalp.
  • Are in good general health.

It may not be suitable if you have alopecia areata of the beard (barbae), which is an autoimmune condition usually treated medically, or active skin conditions in the area. If you also expect to need a scalp transplant in future, the plan should keep enough donor hair for both.

How many grafts do you need for a beard?

It depends on the area and density you want. Filling a few patches can take 300 to 600 grafts. Building a fuller moustache and goatee often takes 1,000 to 1,500. A full beard, including cheeks, jawline, chin and moustache, can take 2,500 to 3,500. Our guide to how many grafts you need explains how surgeons estimate graft counts for the scalp, and the same principles apply.

How much does a beard transplant cost in the UK?

UK beard transplant prices commonly range from about £3,000 to £8,000, depending on the graft count, the technique and the clinic. In London, typical per-graft prices run from about £3,500 for 500 grafts to £7,900 for 3,500 grafts. Our cost per graft guide gives the full table.

What happens during a beard transplant?

  1. Design. The surgeon marks the beard shape with you, including the cheek line and neckline, so it suits your face.
  2. Local anaesthetic. The donor area and the face are numbed.
  3. Extraction. Grafts are removed from the donor area, usually by FUE. The back of the scalp is often trimmed short for this.
  4. Implantation. Grafts are placed one by one at a very shallow angle, following the direction of natural beard growth.
  5. Aftercare instructions. You go home the same day.

Most sessions take most of a day, depending on the graft count.

What is the recovery after a beard transplant?

What is the recovery after a beard transplant?
Time after surgeryWhat to expect
Days 1–3Redness, mild swelling, tiny crusts around each graft
Days 4–7Crusts start to fall away; many people return to desk work
Days 7–10Most crusts gone; redness fades
Weeks 2–8Transplanted hairs often shed; follicles remain
Months 3–4New growth starts
Months 6–9A noticeable beard
Month 12Most of the final result

Swelling in the face usually settles within a few days. Avoid shaving the transplanted area until your clinic says it is safe, often around 10 to 14 days, and avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and sun on the treated area for the period your clinic advises. Our time off work guide covers returning to work in more detail.

Can you shave after a beard transplant?

Yes, once healed. The transplanted hairs are permanent and grow like beard hair, so you can trim, shape and shave them. Clinics usually advise waiting about two weeks before using a razor on the area and a little longer before using clippers close to the skin. Ask your own clinic for timings.

Does a beard transplant look natural?

It can look very natural when the grafts are single and two-hair units, placed at the right angle and direction, with a design that suits your face. Scalp hair can be slightly finer or different in texture from beard hair, but once it grows to beard length most people find it blends well. Poor results usually come from grafts placed too steeply, in the wrong direction or too far apart.

What are the risks of a beard transplant?

As with any hair transplant: redness, swelling, infection, folliculitis, numbness, small scars in the donor area, ingrown hairs and lower than expected growth. Facial grafts can occasionally leave small marks if placed poorly. We explain all of these before you consent. Our guide to hair transplant risks and side effects covers them in more depth.

Can you have a beard and scalp transplant at the same time?

Sometimes, but it is usually better planned carefully. Both use the same donor area, so taking grafts for the beard reduces what is available for the scalp. If you are likely to need scalp work in future, your surgeon may advise doing the scalp first, keeping a beard session small, or waiting until your hair loss pattern is clearer. Doing both on the same day makes for a very long session and more swelling. Our guide to how many grafts you need explains donor limits.

Are there alternatives to a beard transplant?

Some men try topical minoxidil on the beard area, which can increase growth for some but may need ongoing use, and some find growth returns once treatment stops. Others grow the beard longer to cover patches, or use beard fillers and pencils. A doctor can discuss these with you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a beard transplant cost in London?
Typically from about £3,500 for small areas up to around £7,900 for a full beard of about 3,500 grafts.
Is a beard transplant permanent?
Usually, yes. Hair taken from the donor area resists pattern hair loss and normally keeps growing in its new position.
How long does a beard transplant take to grow?
New growth usually starts at 3 to 4 months, with a noticeable beard by 6 to 9 months and most of the result at 12 months.
Does a beard transplant hurt?
It is done under local anaesthetic, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. The face and donor area can be tender for a few days.
How many grafts are needed for a full beard?
Usually around 2,500 to 3,500, depending on face size and the density you want.
