2,000 Grafts: Coverage, Cost and Results
Short answer
What can 2,000 grafts cover?
2,000 grafts is typically enough to rebuild a receded hairline and front third (Norwood 3), or to give good density to a moderate crown. It usually means roughly 4,000 to 5,000 hairs. In London, 2,000 grafts typically costs about £6,100 to £6,400 with FUE.
Two thousand grafts is one of the most common session sizes we discuss. It sits in the middle of the range: enough to make a significant visible difference to the hairline or crown, while still preserving donor hair for the future. Whether it is the right number for you depends on the size of the area, how dense you want it, the characteristics of your hair and how your hair loss is likely to progress.
| Question | Typical answer |
|---|---|
| Hairs in 2,000 grafts | About 4,000–5,000 |
| Area covered at good density | About 40–60 cm² |
| Best suited to | Norwood 3 hairline and front, or a moderate crown |
| London cost (FUE) | About £6,100–£6,400 |
| London cost (DHI) | About £7,000–£7,600 |
| Procedure time | One day |
| Final result | 12–18 months |
What does 2,000 grafts cover?
Coverage depends on the density placed. As a rule of thumb, natural-looking density is often achieved with around 35 to 50 grafts per square centimetre. At that density, 2,000 grafts covers about 40 to 60 square centimetres. In practice this commonly means:
| Area | Can 2,000 grafts do it? |
|---|---|
| Temple refinement only | Yes, with grafts to spare; usually fewer needed |
| Norwood 2 hairline | Yes, generously |
| Norwood 3 hairline and front third | Yes, usually well |
| Norwood 3 vertex (front plus crown) | Front well; crown only partly |
| Moderate crown alone | Yes, often |
| Norwood 4 and 5 | Front and part of mid-scalp; more needed for full coverage |
| Norwood 6 and 7 | Not enough for full coverage |

Grafts vs hairs: why the number matters
A graft, or follicular unit, is a natural group of one to four hairs. Clinics should quote in grafts, not hairs. If a quote mentions "hairs", divide by about two to two and a half to compare it with a graft-based quote. Our guide to hair transplant cost per graft explains how to compare prices fairly.
How much does a 2,000 graft transplant cost in London?
Typical London prices for 2,000 grafts are about £6,100 to £6,400 with FUE. DHI is usually around £900 to £1,200 more. Prices for nearby session sizes:
| Grafts | Typical London price (FUE) |
|---|---|
| 1,000 | £4,500–£4,900 |
| 1,200 | About £4,900 |
| 1,800–2,500 | £5,900–£6,900 |
| 2,000 | £6,100–£6,400 |
| 3,500 | About £7,900 |

Request a hair assessmentWho is 2,000 grafts right for?
It tends to suit:
- Men at Norwood 3 who want a restored hairline and front
- Men at Norwood 2 to 3 with a mature hairline who want density at the front
- People with a moderate crown and a stable hairline
- Women with frontal thinning or a high forehead who need a moderate session
It may not be enough if you have advanced loss, very fine hair, or you want high density across both front and crown in one session.
Will 2,000 grafts look dense?
At good density over the right area, yes. Factors that make a result look denser:
- Coarse hair covers more scalp per hair
- Curly or wavy hair gives more visual volume
- Low contrast between hair and skin colour
- Good native hair around and behind the grafts
Fine, straight, dark hair on pale skin needs more grafts for the same visual density.
How long does a 2,000 graft session take?
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Design and preparation | 30–60 minutes |
| Extraction | 2–3 hours |
| Break | 30–45 minutes |
| Implantation | 2–3 hours |
| Aftercare briefing | 15–30 minutes |
Most people go home the same day. Our aftercare guide explains the first two weeks.
Results timeline after 2,000 grafts
- Weeks 2–6: transplanted hairs shed; this is normal. See shock loss.
- Months 3–4: new hairs start to grow, often fine.
- Months 6–8: noticeable improvement.
- Months 8–12: most of the visible change.
- Months 12–18: final density and texture.
Our hair transplant recovery timeline covers time off work and each stage in detail.
Will I need more than one session?
Many people are happy with one 2,000 graft session. Others have a second session later to add density or treat the crown, particularly if their hair loss progresses. Planning the hairline conservatively and protecting native hair with medication if recommended helps one session last.
{{CTA}}2,000 grafts vs 3,000 grafts
A larger session covers more area or gives more density, but it also uses more donor hair and costs more. If you are at Norwood 3, 2,000 grafts often gives an excellent front result while keeping donor reserves for the future. At Norwood 4 or 5, a larger session or two sessions is more realistic. We will explain the trade-offs at your assessment.
Is 2,000 grafts safe for my donor area?
For most people with average donor density, 2,000 grafts is a comfortable amount to extract in one session without visible thinning at the back. Those with low donor density may need a smaller session. See hair transplant scars for how donor areas heal.
2,000 grafts with FUE, DHI or FUT
All three techniques can deliver 2,000 grafts in a day. FUE is the most common choice at this size and usually the most cost-effective. DHI can suit hairline work or adding density between existing hairs without shaving, at a higher price. FUT is more often chosen for larger sessions, but some people pick it at this size to avoid trimming the donor area. See FUE vs FUT vs DHI.
Quotes that sound like more for less
If one clinic quotes 2,000 grafts and another quotes 4,000 "hairs" for a similar price, they may be offering roughly the same thing. Ask every clinic for the estimated number of grafts, how the number was worked out and whether the price changes if more or fewer grafts are placed on the day. Our hair transplant clinics in London guide has a full comparison checklist.
How 2,000 grafts are usually distributed
For a Norwood 3 restoration, a typical plan might place around 400 to 600 single-hair grafts along the front edge to create a soft, natural hairline, then 1,400 to 1,600 two and three-hair grafts behind it to build density through the front third. Temple points may take another 100 to 200 grafts. For a crown, grafts are placed in a spiral pattern that follows the natural whorl, with higher density at the centre where the scalp shows most.
Looking after native hair after 2,000 grafts
The transplanted hair is permanent, but the hair around it is not protected. If your loss continues, the area behind a restored hairline can thin and leave an island of transplanted hair. Medication prescribed by a doctor, and in some cases treatments such as PRP, can help protect native hair so the result looks good for longer.
How long 2,000 grafts takes on the day
A 2,000-graft FUE session usually fills most of a day at the clinic. Extraction typically comes first, followed by a break, then site creation and implantation. You are awake under local anaesthetic, and many patients watch films or rest. Expect to arrive in the morning and leave in the late afternoon or early evening, with your scalp bandaged and aftercare instructions. Plan for someone to collect you if you prefer not to travel alone, and keep the next couple of days free for rest and the first wash.
