Hair Transplant Scars: FUE vs FUT and How to Hide Them
Short answer
Do hair transplants leave scars?
Yes, every technique leaves some scarring, but it is usually hidden by hair. FUE and DHI leave tiny round dots spread across the donor area, often invisible at a short clipper length. FUT leaves a single fine line across the back of the head that is hidden by hair a little longer.
Any procedure that removes hair follicles from one area and moves them to another leaves some marks. The question is not whether there will be scarring, but what type, where and how visible. For most patients, the answer is that the marks are hidden by their own hair and nobody else notices. Understanding how each technique heals helps you choose the right one for the hairstyle you want, especially if you like to wear your hair short at the back and sides.
| Item | FUE | DHI | FUT (strip) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Donor scar type | Many tiny round dots | Many tiny round dots | One fine linear scar |
| Where | Spread across back and sides | Spread across back and sides | Across the back of the head |
| Visible with a short buzz cut? | Usually hard to see; possible with very short cuts | Same as FUE | Often visible with very short cuts |
| Hidden by hair of about | A short clipper length | A short clipper length | A little longer at the back |
| Healing | About 7–10 days on the surface | About 7–10 days | Stitches or staples out at 10–14 days |
| Options to improve | SMP; spacing extractions | SMP | FUE grafts into scar; SMP; revision |
What do FUE scars look like?
In follicular unit extraction, each graft is removed with a small circular punch, typically less than a millimetre across. Each extraction site heals into a tiny white dot. Because extractions are spread out across the donor area rather than taken from one place, the dots are separated by hair and usually blend in. Our guide to FUE vs FUT vs DHI explains the techniques.
Things that make FUE scars more noticeable:
- A very short clipper or shaved head
- A large number of grafts taken from a small area
- Dark hair on pale skin, which increases contrast
- Low donor density, so fewer hairs are left to cover the dots

What do FUT scars look like?
In follicular unit transplantation, a strip of scalp is removed from the back of the head, divided under microscopes into grafts, and the wound is closed with stitches or staples. When healed well, this leaves a single fine line across the back of the head. Many surgeons use a trichophytic closure, where hair grows through the scar, to make it less visible. See FUT hair transplants in London for when the strip method is the right choice.
Things that affect FUT scar width:
- Natural skin healing and scalp laxity
- Width of the strip taken
- Tension on the closure
- Previous strip surgery
- Following aftercare, including avoiding heavy exercise early on
DHI scars
DHI uses the same extraction method as FUE, so the donor scars are the same tiny dots. The difference is only in how grafts are implanted. See DHI hair transplants in London.
Recipient area: does it scar?
The recipient area, where grafts are placed, is made of very small incisions. These heal quickly and almost never leave visible marks. Redness may last a few weeks, especially on fair skin. Small bumps or pimples can appear as new hairs grow through at around two to four months, which is normal.

Request a hair assessmentHow short can you cut your hair after a transplant?
| Haircut | After FUE / DHI | After FUT |
|---|---|---|
| Very short buzz cut | Dots may be visible on close inspection | Line likely visible |
| Short clipper cut | Usually well hidden | Line may show |
| Short scissor cut at the back | Hidden | Usually hidden |
| Medium length | Hidden | Hidden |
These are typical; your own result depends on your hair and skin. If you like to keep the back and sides very short, tell us at your assessment, as it affects which technique we recommend.
Can hair transplant scars be hidden?
Yes, there are several options:
- Hair length: the simplest; growing the back slightly longer covers most scars.
- Scalp micropigmentation: tiny pigment dots camouflage pale FUE dots or a FUT line. See scalp micropigmentation in London.
- FUE into a FUT scar: grafts can be implanted directly into a strip scar so hair grows through it.
- Scar revision: a wide FUT scar can sometimes be surgically revised, although results vary.
- Body hair: in some repair cases, beard or body hair can be used. See body hair transplants.
How long do scars take to heal?
| Time | FUE / DHI donor area | FUT donor area |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–7 | Tiny pink dots; scabs | Stitched line; tenderness |
| Days 7–14 | Dots fade as hair grows | Stitches or staples removed |
| Weeks 2–6 | Dots hard to see with hair | Line pink, then fading |
| Months 3–12 | Mature white dots | Mature fine line |

{{CTA}}Overharvesting: the scarring problem to avoid
The biggest scarring risk is not the technique itself but taking too many grafts from the donor area. Overharvesting leaves the back of the head visibly thin, with dots that cannot be hidden. It is more likely with very large single sessions, poor planning or extraction outside the safe donor zone. That is one reason we plan graft numbers carefully and discuss how much donor capacity you will need over your lifetime. See who is not a candidate for a hair transplant.
Repairing scars from a previous transplant
Patients who had surgery elsewhere, in the UK or abroad, and are unhappy with visible scarring can often be helped. Common repair plans include FUE into a strip scar, SMP to blend over-harvested areas and careful redistribution of grafts. Our guide to hair transplants in the UK vs Turkey discusses what to check before choosing a clinic.
Does scarring affect future sessions?
It can. A previous FUT scar may limit how much more strip can be taken, and extensive FUE reduces the remaining donor supply. Planning for possible future sessions from the start helps. If you are early in your hair loss, our guide to the Norwood scale shows how graft needs grow with each stage.
Scarring and hair colour
Contrast matters. Dark hair on pale skin makes any pale dots or lines easier to see when hair is very short. Grey, blond or fine hair on lighter skin tends to blend scars more easily. People with darker skin tones may have a higher tendency to raised or keloid scars, which we ask about before any procedure; see afro hair transplants.
Can scars stop hair growing?
Grafts placed into scar tissue can grow, but scar tissue has a poorer blood supply than normal scalp, so growth rates can be lower. Surgeons often test a small number of grafts in a scar before committing to a larger session, and may place grafts slightly less densely.
Hairstyles that hide scars best
How short you can go depends on the technique. After FUE, most people can wear a short clipper length once healed, though very close shaves may show small dots. After FUT, a slightly longer back and sides usually covers the linear scar well. If you like very short styles, mention this at the assessment, because it may change the recommended technique or point towards SMP to blend any scarring.
