Hair Transplant UK vs Turkey: Real Total Cost and Risks
A hair transplant in Turkey typically costs around £1,500 to £4,000 for a package including the procedure, a hotel and transfers, while the same procedure in London usually costs from about £3,199 on a fixed package to £11,900 for a large per-graft session; once flights, extra nights, time off and aftercare are added, the gap narrows but Turkey usually remains cheaper.
| Cost item | Turkey (typical) | London (typical) |

Why are hair transplants cheaper in Turkey?
Lower wages, rents and running costs explain much of the difference. Istanbul in particular has a very large hair transplant industry, with high patient volumes and competitive pricing, and clinics package flights, hotels and transfers to make travel easy. Currency movements also make Turkish prices look attractive in pounds.
Price differences also reflect differences in how procedures are run. In some high-volume clinics, technicians carry out much of the extraction and implantation, the surgeon may oversee several patients on the same day, and the doctor you meet may not be the one who operates. That is not true of every Turkish clinic, and there are excellent surgeons in Turkey. But it is the main thing to check.

What is the real total cost of a Turkish hair transplant?
The package price is only part of it. A realistic budget includes:
- The package: commonly £1,500 to £4,000.
- Flights: return flights from London to Istanbul often cost £100 to £350, more in school holidays.
- Extra hotel nights: if you want more time before flying, often £50 to £150 a night.
- Time off work: usually four to seven days including travel, compared with three to seven days after surgery in London.
- Medication and aftercare products: often included, but check.
- Travel insurance that covers elective surgery abroad, which standard policies often exclude.
- Complications: if something goes wrong after you are home, you may need to pay for private care in the UK or fly back.
For a typical 3,000-graft session, the all-in cost in Turkey is often around £2,000 to £5,000, against £3,199 to £7,600 in London.
What are the risks of a hair transplant in Turkey?
The surgical risks are the same anywhere: infection, bleeding, swelling, numbness, folliculitis, scarring and poor growth. Some risks are higher when surgery happens abroad and when clinics run very high volumes:
- Who performs the surgery. In some clinics, unqualified technicians carry out surgical steps with limited oversight.
- Overharvesting. Very large graft counts in one session can leave the donor area visibly thin and use up grafts you may need later.
- Unnatural hairlines. Low, straight, uniform hairlines can look unnatural as you age.
- Limited aftercare. Follow-up is usually by photo, and problems such as infection or poor growth may be noticed late.
- Flying soon after surgery. Swelling, sitting for hours and travel hygiene can make the first days harder.
- Unlicensed clinics. Turkey licenses health facilities, but unregistered "black market" clinics also operate.
Professional bodies including the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery have campaigned about unlicensed clinics where surgery is carried out by people without medical training.
What are the benefits of having a hair transplant in the UK?
| Item | UK (England) | Turkey |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic regulation | Must be registered with the Care Quality Commission | Licensed by the Ministry of Health; unlicensed clinics also exist |
| Doctor registration | GMC register, publicly searchable | Turkish medical registration |
| Inspection reports | Published on the CQC website | Not usually available to UK patients |
| Language | English | Often through interpreters or coordinators |
| Follow-up | In person, a short journey away | Usually remote |
| Complaints and redress | UK complaints routes apply | Turkish legal system |
The main advantage of surgery near home is continuity. The doctor who assesses you can see you again at one week, three months, six months and twelve months, and act early if something is not right.
How do you check a Turkish clinic if you go?
- Ask for the full name of the surgeon who will perform your procedure, and check their medical registration.
- Ask exactly which steps the surgeon performs and which are done by technicians.
- Ask how many patients are treated on your surgery day.
- Get a written plan with graft count, technique, hairline design and what is included.
- Ask how aftercare works once you are home, and what happens if growth is poor.
- Check your travel insurance covers elective surgery and complications.
- Be wary of guarantees, very large graft promises and pressure to book quickly.

Request a hair assessmentHow do you check a UK clinic?
Search the clinic on the CQC website and read its latest report, check the surgeon on the GMC register, and ask the same questions about who does what and how many procedures run each day. Our guide to choosing a hair transplant clinic in the UK has the full checklist.
Is the result better in the UK or Turkey?
Neither country guarantees a better result. Results depend on the surgeon's skill, how carefully grafts are handled, the hairline design, the plan for future loss and your own hair. Many people have good results in Turkey, and some have poor results in the UK. What changes is how easy it is to check the clinic, see the same doctor again and get help if something goes wrong.
What if you need a repair after surgery abroad?
Repairs are possible in some cases: removing or redistributing poorly placed grafts, refining a hairline, or camouflaging donor scarring. They are limited by the donor hair you have left. If overharvesting has thinned the donor area, options are fewer. A UK assessment can tell you what is realistic. Prices follow the same per-graft bands as first procedures.
How much does a hair transplant cost in London?
Typical London per-graft prices run from about £3,500 for 500 grafts to £7,900 for 3,500 grafts and £8,900 to £11,900 for 4,500 to 6,000 grafts. Fixed packages start from around £3,199 for FUE up to 3,000 grafts. Our guides to hair transplant cost in the UK and cost per graft give the detail.
