Body Hair Transplant: When Beard or Chest Donor Works
Short answer
Can body hair be used for a hair transplant?
Yes, in selected cases. Beard hair is the most useful body donor because it is coarse and plentiful; chest hair can help in some men. Body hair is usually used to supplement a limited scalp donor, often for advanced loss, repair or scar camouflage, rather than as the main source.
Every hair transplant is limited by the donor supply. Most people have enough hair at the back and sides of the scalp for the coverage they need. But at advanced stages of hair loss, after previous transplants, or when the scalp donor is naturally thin, the scalp alone may not be enough. In those cases, hair from other parts of the body can sometimes be used to supplement it. This is known as body hair transplantation, or BHT.
| Donor area | Hair characteristics | Usefulness | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beard (under chin and neck) | Thick, coarse, dense | High | Supplement scalp donor; crown; scars |
| Chest | Medium to coarse, variable density | Moderate | Crown and mid-scalp filling |
| Abdomen | Finer, variable | Lower | Occasional supplement |
| Arms and legs | Fine, short growth | Low | Rarely; hairline softening |
| Back and shoulders | Variable | Low to moderate | Occasional supplement |
Why use body hair?
The main reasons are:
- Advanced hair loss: at Norwood 6 and 7, graft needs can exceed what the scalp can safely supply. See the Norwood scale.
- Depleted donor: after previous sessions, the back of the scalp may be over-harvested.
- Repair work: filling a FUT strip scar or over-harvested areas. See hair transplant scars.
- Crown coverage: coarse beard hair can add density to the crown.

How is body hair different from scalp hair?
| Feature | Scalp hair | Body hair |
|---|---|---|
| Growth phase | Long, so hair grows long | Shorter, so hair grows shorter |
| Hairs per graft | Usually 1–4 | Usually 1–2 |
| Calibre | Fine to coarse | Beard coarse; others variable |
| Angle under skin | Predictable | More acute, harder to extract |
| Colour and texture | Match surrounding hair | May differ |
Because of these differences, body hair is best mixed with scalp hair, not used on its own for visible areas like the hairline.
Is beard hair the best body donor?
Usually, yes. Beard hair is coarse, so each hair covers more of the scalp, and the area under the chin and on the neck can provide hundreds to a couple of thousand grafts in suitable men. Hair taken from under the jawline also leaves the visible beard largely unchanged. Many surgeons use beard grafts for the crown and mid-scalp, where coarse hair adds density, and keep scalp grafts for the hairline. If you want a fuller beard yourself, see beard transplants in London.
Can chest hair be used?
Chest hair can be useful in men with dense, coarse chest hair. It typically grows shorter than scalp hair and may have a different curl. It is usually placed in the crown or mid-scalp mixed among scalp grafts.

Request a hair assessmentWho is a good candidate for body hair transplant?
- Men with advanced loss and limited scalp donor
- Patients who have had previous transplants and need more grafts
- Men with dense, coarse beard or chest hair
- People with realistic expectations about length and texture
It is rarely the first choice for someone at an early stage of hair loss with a healthy scalp donor. In those cases, scalp grafts alone usually give a better match. Read who is not a candidate for a hair transplant.
How is body hair extracted?
Body hair is extracted by FUE, one graft at a time. Extraction is slower and more technical than from the scalp because the hairs grow at sharper angles and the skin is different. Areas are trimmed beforehand. The donor sites heal as tiny dots, similar to scalp FUE, although healing on the body can take a little longer.
What results can you expect?
Body hair can add meaningful density, especially to the crown, when mixed with scalp hair. Results vary more than with scalp-only procedures. Body hair usually:
- Grows shorter than scalp hair
- May differ slightly in texture or curl
- Takes a similar time to grow, with final results at 12 to 18 months
How much does a body hair transplant cost?
Body grafts are usually priced per graft and often cost more than scalp grafts because extraction is slower and requires more skill. Scalp FUE in London typically costs £4,500 to £4,900 for 1,000 grafts and £6,100 to £6,400 for 2,000. Your quote will reflect how many grafts come from each area. Alternatives when donor supply is limited
| Option | What it offers |
|---|---|
| Front-weighted scalp transplant | Prioritises hairline and front with available scalp grafts |
| Scalp micropigmentation | Creates the appearance of density without grafts |
| Medication and PRP | May protect remaining native hair |
| Combination | Transplant for the front, SMP for density elsewhere |
See scalp micropigmentation in London and PRP hair treatment.
Recovery after body hair extraction
- Small dots in the body donor area, healing over one to two weeks
- Mild redness and tenderness
- Avoid tight clothing over chest donor sites for a few days
- Beard donor areas can usually be shaved after about one to two weeks
- Scalp recovery follows the usual pattern; see hair transplant aftercare
Will the donor area look different afterwards?
Extraction is spread out so the donor area keeps a natural look. On the beard, grafts are usually taken from under the jaw and on the neck, which is less visible. On the chest, the remaining hair usually looks less dense rather than patchy. Pale dots may be noticeable on very hairless or tanned skin. We will show you which areas would be used and how much could safely be taken before any procedure.
Body hair for women
Body hair transplant is rarely suitable for women because body hair is usually fine and sparse. Women with limited scalp donor have other options; see female hair transplants in London.
How many body grafts can be taken?
Numbers depend entirely on your density and hair quality. Some men with a dense beard can provide a meaningful number of grafts from under the jaw and neck; chest donors vary more widely. Because body grafts mostly contain one or two hairs, more grafts are needed to achieve the same coverage as scalp grafts. We count and test donor areas before including body hair in a plan.
Body hair transplant questions to ask
- Which body areas would you use for me, and how many grafts from each?
- Where would body grafts be placed, and where would scalp grafts go?
- How will body hair look next to my scalp hair once grown?
- How long will the body donor sites take to heal?
- What is the price per graft for body hair compared with scalp hair?
What to ask at a body hair transplant consultation
Ask how many body-hair transplants the surgeon has performed and to see results from patients with similar hair types. Check which donor areas are being considered and how many grafts they can realistically supply without leaving visible thinning. Ask how body grafts will be blended with scalp grafts and where each type will be placed. Find out what the expected growth rate is for body hair in the scalp, and how long you should wait before judging the result. Clear answers help you decide whether the extra cost and recovery are worth it.
