# How Much Time Off Work After a Hair Transplant?

Updated 10 October 2026. By Hair Transplants London.

Most people need about 3 to 7 days off work after a hair transplant if they have a desk job, and around 10 to 14 days for physical or outdoor work, with longer if you want the scabs and redness to be completely gone before anyone sees you; working from home can often start after 2 or 3 days.

| Type of work | Typical time off | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Working from home, no video | 2–3 days | Swelling and tenderness settle; no one sees the scalp |
| Office or desk job | 5–7 days | Scabs and swelling are visible for about a week |
| Customer-facing role | 7–10 days | Redness and crusts can be noticeable |
| Physical or manual work | 10–14 days | Sweating, lifting and bending can disturb grafts |
| Work in dusty or dirty environments | 10–14 days | Infection risk while the scalp heals |
| Jobs needing a hard hat or helmet | 10–14 days, or as advised | Pressure on grafts in the first fortnight |
| Outdoor work in the sun | 10–14 days plus scalp protection | Sun on healing skin |

These are typical timings. Your own clinic's advice comes first. At [Hair Transplants London](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/) we give you written aftercare instructions, including guidance on returning to work, before you leave on surgery day.

## How many days of rest do you need after a hair transplant?

Most people rest for one to three days after surgery. The first night is spent sleeping semi-upright to reduce swelling, and many clinics see you the next day for the first wash and a check. Over the following days the scalp is tender, swelling may move down onto the forehead and around the eyes, and tiny crusts form around each graft. Rest, gentle walking and following the washing routine are all that is needed.

## What does the first two weeks look like day by day?

| Day | What you may notice | Work-related tips |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Surgery day | Numbness wearing off; dressing on donor area | Go home and rest |
| Day 1 | Tenderness; first wash often at clinic | Rest |
| Days 2–3 | Swelling on the forehead, sometimes around eyes | Email-only work from home is possible |
| Days 4–5 | Swelling easing; crusts visible | Video calls with the camera off |
| Days 6–7 | Crusts starting to loosen with washing | Many desk workers return |
| Days 8–10 | Most crusts gone; pinkness remains | Customer-facing roles often return |
| Days 11–14 | Scalp looks much more normal | Physical work often resumes, as advised |

## When can you go back to an office job?

Many people with desk jobs go back after about five to seven days. By then the swelling has usually settled and the crusts are starting to come away. If you are happy for colleagues to know, some go back sooner. The recipient area may still look pink for a few weeks, especially on fair skin, and FUE donor areas look short and dotted until the hair grows a little.

## When can you go back to physical work?

Usually after 10 to 14 days. Heavy lifting, bending and sweating raise blood pressure in the scalp and can disturb grafts or cause bleeding in the first days. Dust and dirt raise infection risk. Clinics typically advise avoiding strenuous activity for around two weeks or more. If your job involves a lot of exertion, discuss timing with your clinic before booking surgery.

## Can you wear a hat or helmet at work after a hair transplant?

Many clinics allow a loose, clean hat after the first few days, but not anything tight that presses on or rubs the grafts. Hard hats and helmets usually need to wait until the grafts are secure, often around 10 to 14 days, and should be adjusted so they do not press on the treated area. Ask your clinic for your timing.

## How do you hide a hair transplant at work?

- **Unshaven or partially shaven techniques** make the donor area much less obvious.

- **Longer hair on top** can cover a hairline once crusts have gone, as long as it is not pressing on grafts.

- **Time your surgery** before a holiday or a long weekend.

- **A loose hat** if your clinic allows it and your workplace does.

- **Working from home** for the first week.

The donor area after FUE is usually trimmed short. If you normally wear your hair short, it blends in within a week or two. If you wear it longer, unshaven FUE or FUT may suit you better. Our comparison of [FUE vs FUT vs DHI](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/guides/fue-vs-fut-vs-dhi) explains the differences.

## Does FUT need more time off than FUE?

FUT leaves stitches or a closed incision at the back of the head, which can feel tight and tender for longer, and stitches are often removed at around 10 to 14 days. Most desk workers still return within a week, as long hair hides the incision. Physical work may need a little longer. FUE donor sites heal faster.

## When can you exercise after a hair transplant?

Clinics commonly advise avoiding strenuous exercise for at least two weeks, with gentle walking fine from the first days. Swimming, saunas and steam rooms usually wait longer, often around four weeks, to reduce infection risk. Contact sports may need longer. Our [hair transplant recovery timeline](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/guides/hair-transplant-recovery-timeline) covers exercise and activity stage by stage.

## When can you travel after a hair transplant?

Short journeys by car or public transport are usually fine from the next day. Flying is often fine after a few days if you are comfortable, but check with your clinic, keep the scalp protected and avoid knocking it on overhead lockers. Avoid sun on the scalp for the first weeks.

## What about shock loss and work?

Between weeks two and eight, many transplanted hairs shed. The scalp can look much as it did before surgery for a while. This does not usually affect work, but it can surprise colleagues who noticed the change at first. Our guide to [shock loss and grafts falling out](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/guides/hair-grafts-falling-out-shock-loss) explains why it happens.

## How do you plan time off for a hair transplant?

1. **Choose a date with flexibility** for at least one to two weeks afterwards.

2. **Avoid major events** such as weddings, presentations or holidays in the first fortnight.

3. **Book leave or remote working** for the first week.

4. **Make sure you can attend follow-up visits**, including the next-day check.

5. **Tell your clinic about your job** so their advice fits it.

## How much does a hair transplant cost?

In London, typical per-graft prices run from about £3,500 for 500 grafts to £11,900 for 4,500 to 6,000 grafts, with fixed packages from around £3,199. See our [hair transplant cost guide](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/guides/hair-transplant-cost-uk).
