# PRP Hair Treatment London: Cost, Sessions and Results

Updated 21 October 2026. By Hair Transplants London.

Short answer

## Does PRP work for hair loss?

PRP can help some people with early thinning by strengthening existing follicles, and it is often used alongside a hair transplant. It does not regrow hair where follicles have gone. Most plans start with three sessions about a month apart, then maintenance every few months.

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, uses a concentrated sample of your own blood platelets, injected into the scalp, to support hair follicles that are thinning. It has become a popular non-surgical option for people in the early stages of hair loss and for those who want to protect native hair after a transplant. It is not a cure for baldness, and results vary between people, so it is worth understanding what it can and cannot do before you start a course.

| Question | Typical answer |
| --- | --- |
| What is it? | Your own platelets, concentrated and injected into the scalp |
| Who does it suit? | Early thinning, diffuse thinning, post-transplant support |
| Sessions | Usually 3 sessions 4–6 weeks apart, then maintenance |
| Appointment length | About 45–60 minutes |
| Downtime | Usually none; mild tenderness for a day |
| When results show | Typically 3–6 months |
| Does it regrow bald areas? | No |

## How does PRP hair treatment work?

1. **Blood sample**: a small amount of blood is taken from your arm, similar to a routine blood test.

2. **Separation**: the sample is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from red cells.

3. **Preparation**: the scalp is cleaned, and numbing cream or local anaesthetic may be applied.

4. **Injection**: the plasma is injected in small amounts across the thinning areas.

5. **Aftercare**: you can usually go straight back to normal activities.

Platelets contain growth factors involved in tissue repair. The idea is that delivering them to the scalp prolongs the growth phase of hair and supports weakened follicles.

## Who is PRP suitable for?

PRP tends to suit:

- Men and women with early or moderate thinning where follicles are still present

- Women with diffuse thinning across the top

- People who want to protect existing hair before or after a transplant

- People who are not ready for surgery

It is less likely to help:

- Areas that have been completely bald for years

- Hair loss caused by scarring conditions

- Hair loss with an untreated medical cause, such as thyroid problems or iron deficiency

If your hair loss is sudden or patchy, or you are unsure of the cause, it is important to get a medical assessment first. Our guide to [female hair transplants](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/guides/female-hair-transplant-london) covers common causes of thinning in women.

## How many PRP sessions will I need?

| Phase | Typical schedule | Purpose |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Initial course | 3 sessions, 4–6 weeks apart | Assess response |
| Review | About 3 months after the last session | Compare photos |
| Maintenance | Every 3–6 months | Sustain any benefit |

If you see no meaningful change after the initial course, continuing is unlikely to be worthwhile, and we will tell you so.

## How much does PRP hair treatment cost in London?

PRP is priced per session or as a course. London clinics commonly charge a few hundred pounds per session, and course packages usually reduce the per-session price. The cost depends on the preparation system used, the area treated and whether other treatments are combined. When comparing quotes, check:

- How many sessions are included

- Whether reviews and progress photos are included

- What preparation system is used

- Who carries out the treatment

Because PRP is ongoing, it is worth looking at the cost over a year rather than a single session. For comparison, a hair transplant is a one-off procedure; see [hair transplant costs in the UK](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/guides/hair-transplant-cost-uk).

## What results can you expect?

Results vary more with PRP than with surgery. People who respond tend to notice:

- Less shedding in the shower and on the pillow

- Thicker-feeling existing hair

- Improved density in thinning areas

People who do not respond see little change. PRP does not create new follicles, so it cannot fill a bald hairline or crown. Progress photos taken in the same light and position at each visit are the best way to judge results.

## PRP and hair transplants

PRP is often combined with a hair transplant. It may be used:

- **During surgery**, to bathe grafts or inject into the recipient area

- **After surgery**, to support native hair around the transplanted grafts

- **Before surgery**, as part of a plan to stabilise thinning

A transplant moves permanent follicles; PRP may help protect the hair you still have. Some patients find the combination gives a fuller overall result. ## PRP vs other hair loss treatments

| Treatment | What it does | Typical commitment |
| --- | --- | --- |
| PRP | May strengthen existing follicles | Course of sessions, then maintenance |
| Prescription medication | Can slow loss and regrow some hair | Daily, long term |
| Topical treatments | Can support growth | Daily, long term |
| Hair transplant | Moves permanent follicles to thin or bald areas | One or two procedures |
| Scalp micropigmentation | Creates the look of density with pigment | Two to three sessions, top-ups |

## Is PRP safe?

Because PRP uses your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction is very low. Possible side effects include tenderness, mild swelling, bruising and a headache for a day or so. It is not usually recommended for people with certain blood or platelet disorders, active scalp infections or some medical conditions, which is why a medical history is taken first.

## What happens after a PRP session?

- Avoid washing your hair for the rest of the day

- Skip hair dye, heavy styling products and intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours

- Avoid saunas and steam rooms for a day or two

- Continue any medication you have been prescribed

## Does PRP help women's hair loss?

Many women with diffuse thinning try PRP because it is non-surgical, avoids daily medication and suits hair loss that is spread across the top rather than concentrated at a hairline. Results vary in the same way as for men. Women whose thinning is linked to hormonal changes, iron levels or thyroid function usually do best when the underlying cause is also addressed.

## PRP for beard and eyebrows

PRP is mainly used on the scalp. For sparse beards and eyebrows, a transplant is usually the more predictable option; see [beard transplants in London](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/guides/beard-transplant-london) and [eyebrow transplant costs](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/guides/eyebrow-transplant-cost).

## How do you know if PRP is working?

Use objective measures rather than day-to-day impressions:

- Standardised photos at each visit, in the same light and position

- A rough count of hairs shed during washing over a set period

- How your parting or crown looks under the same bathroom light

- Feedback from your hairdresser, who sees your hair regularly

## Combining PRP with medication

PRP and prescription medication work in different ways and are often used together. Medication addresses the hormonal cause of male pattern loss; PRP may support follicle health locally. If you are already using medication, keep taking it during a PRP course unless your doctor advises otherwise, so you can judge the combined effect.

## Is PRP worth trying?

PRP suits some people with early thinning who want a non-surgical option. Results vary from person to person, so we assess your hair and discuss realistic expectations first.

## Is PRP right for me?

The best way to find out is an assessment of your hair, scalp and donor area, with a discussion of whether PRP, a transplant, medication or a combination is most likely to help. [Request an assessment](https://hairtransplantslondon.com/#enquire) through our online form.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many PRP sessions do I need for hair?

A typical starting course is three sessions four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every three to six months if you respond well.

### How much does PRP hair treatment cost in London?

PRP is priced per session or as a course; London clinics commonly charge a few hundred pounds per session, with course packages reducing the per-session price.

### When will I see results from PRP?

Changes, if any, are usually seen after three to six months, typically as reduced shedding and thicker existing hair rather than new hair in bald areas.

### Is PRP painful?

Most people feel a series of small pinpricks. Numbing cream or a local anaesthetic can make it comfortable.

### Can PRP replace a hair transplant?

No. PRP may support existing hair but cannot restore areas that are already bald. A transplant moves permanent follicles into those areas.
